Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid lift surgery can be a very beneficial
procedure for patients who wish to correct saggy or
puffy lower eyelids. The procedure removes excess tissue
and fat, bringing about a more refreshed, youthful
facial aesthetic. As a relatively simple and quick
procedure, lower eyelid surgery can be performed under
local anesthesia and a sedative, making it a very
popular cosmetic treatment.

Lower Eyelid Surgery Goals
While upper eyelid surgery primarily involves the
removal of sagging skin, lower eyelid surgery also
involves the removal of fat deposits, which are more
prevalent under the eye. Removing these deposits in
conjunction with the sagging skin leaves a smooth, firm,
younger-looking surface above the cheek, leading to an
overall youthful and revitalized look. In addition,
lower eyelid surgery allows the surgeon to transfer fat
to hollowed areas under the eye, leading to plump,
healthy-looking skin where the face may have previously
looked sunken in.
Overview of the Lower Eyelid Lift Procedure
To perform lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon first makes
an incision below the lower eyelashes; the incision is
made carefully in a discreet place hidden from plain
view. Excess fat, skin, and muscle are removed as the
surgeon sees fit. Sometimes, the fat is redistributed in
order to minimize puffiness and uneven swelling. If
muscle laxity is an existing problem, this will also be
corrected during surgery.
The incision made to perform eyelid lift surgery heals
quickly among the eyelid's surrounding natural creases.
No-Scar Alternative (Transconjunctival Blepharoplasty)
For patients who have less pronounced under-eye bags,
transconjunctival lower eyelid surgery may be an
effective procedure. In these cases, simply removing
pockets of fat without removing any skin is all that’s
required. Since this can be accomplished through several
tiny incisions inside the lower eyelid, no visible
scarring from the blepharoplasty procedure results.

If you're considering lower eyelid blepharoplasty,
the following information will provide you with a good
introduction to the procedure. For more detailed
information about how this procedure may help you, we
recommend that you consult a plastic surgeon who is
board certified or has completed a residency program
that includes instruction in this procedure.
Q: I am 31 and had lower bleph 2 wks ago.
One eye is droopy, should I be concerned? Will it
improve or do I need a 2nd operation?
A: A "droopy" eyelid is not
a good sign. It depends on how droopy it is as to
whether it goes back to normal. You need to ask your
plastic surgeon.
Q: My dark eye circles have been with me
since I was a kid. Sleeping more doesn't help much to
get rid of them. Do you think I can do a surgery and
remove them forever in my life?
A: Yes, you probably can. You need
surgery called a lower blepharoplasty.
Q: I don't have puffy bags under my eyes, however, I do
have trouble with dark circles from time to time. Can
you recomend something? Stacy
A: I suggest that you see a
dermatologist. The use of a drug call "hydroquinone"
might be helpful, but you need a doctor to advise you.
Otherwise try makeup.
Q: I am considering lower eyelid surgery. I was
diagnosed with Graves disease 12 years ago and now take
a hormone replacement. I also have to use artificial
tears on occasion. Can I still have lower eyelid
surgery?
A: Yes, you can still have lower
eyelid surgery. Temporary dry eye is a rare
complication of the operation, so you might need more
artificial tears for a while.
Q: I was told I couldn't have lower eyelid surgery
because I have dry eyes. I sthat correct? Barb
A: Dry eye sometime occurs
temporarily after eyelid surgery. You need to get
advice from your ophthalmologist as to the degree of
your specific condition and the risk that you might
incur.
Q: I am thinking about having upper and lower eyelid
surgery. However, I have read taht there is a small
chance of blindness resulting from this. Is it mroe
common in the upper or lower procedure?
A: The last time I looked, there were
eight cases of blindness from lower eyelid surgery.
There have been at least 2 million of these surgeries
performed. It seems to happen from a particular kind
of local anesthesia injection that most doctors do not
use. I have not heard of cases of blindness from upper
eyelid surgery.
Q: what is the best cosmatic procidure for under eye
wrinkles, and what is the price? please answer soon. p.s
im 20 yrs. old and i have already tried expensive
creams
A: There are no creams that will
remove wrinkles. Either a chemical peel or a laser
resurfacing might help. Prices vary according to the
experience and expertise of the plastic surgeon. I
suggest that you look further here on
PerfectYourself.com where you will find several
reputable board certified plastic surgeons in your
area. Ask the ones in whom you might be interested to
reply to your question.
Q: Are there any procedures yet to correct dark
under-eye circles? Thank You...Diana
A: Your problem is most likely caused
by herniation of the cushioning fat under your eyes.
This can certainly be corrected with surgery. The
operation is called a lower blepharoplasty.
Q: Hi my name is Trina. I'm thinking of getting the
lower eyelid surgery and the lasik eye surgery. Does it
matter which one I get first? I also have a very slight
cornea scarring that is not visible to the eye. It's
from an infection years ago. Could that be a risk and
what is the name of the local anesthesia that caused
blindness in those patients? Thanks
A: It does not matter which you have
first. I do not know about the risks of lasik eye
surgery. You need to ask your eye doctor. Blindness is
not due to the particuar anesthetic, but it where it
is accidentally injected that injures the optic nerve.
Q: I have dark circles under my eyes caused by visible
blue veins under the skin. Can these be safely removed,
either by injection or surgery?? Theresa
A: The dark circles are more likely
due to herniated fat pads and can be removed. The
veins can also be removed surgically, but they
sometimes recur.
Q: A lower blepharoplasty 8 weeks ago left scar tissue
that causes my lid to pull from my eye and looks
terrible. Can anything be done? Sharon
A: You may just be swollen; but if it
seems that severe, your plastic surgeon may have
removed too much skin and pulled your eyelid down. You
might need to have it reconstructed after six months.
Better discuss this with your doctor.
Q: I am interested in lower eye lid work done. I have
fat pockets under my eyes. I want to know if I can get
them removed without surgery? Getting the fat sucked out
by injection. Is that possible? Or is surgery the only
option in fat pocket removal?
A: Some people try to suction the fat
out, but it can be overdone or incomplete, so I do not
recommend it. You should have the surgery which is not
only accurate, but will also remove any excess lower
lid skin as well.
Q: I recently consulted a plastic surgeon for under
eyelid surgery, Due to my age the surgeon refused to do
the surgery. I recently consulted another doctor about
doing the laser under eyelid . .Will laser be as
effective as having the the surgery?? I would hate to
spend $2,500 and continue having puffy eyes!!!
A: I am not familiar with laser
surgery for lower eyelid fat, but no excess skin can
be removed that way. There is no reason not to have a
conventional procedure done. I would save your money
and have it done properly. At least get a third
opinion.
Q: I am an Af-Amer. female, 40 yrs old with deep set
folds under my eyes (no puffiness). Would Resalyne be
for me? What's the cost?
A: You would need to be evaulated to
determine whether a filler substance or lower eyelid
surgery would be more appropriate.
Q: I am 25 and have small bumps from sweet glands that
always been with me and dark circles, wrinkles, and suggy
under eyes. I am looking for upper and lower eyelid
surgery. Is it going to help me to fix those all problems
or not? and How much roughly would it cost me?
Thanks,...Tamo
A: I don't know if your sweat gland
problem can be helped, but eyelid surgery would
definitely help the wrinkles, sagginess and dark
circles.
Q: i am 50 years old with almost perfect complexion
other than the deep lines under my eyes. i dont have any
bags. what could be done??? best rgds nalan rimer
A: You wold either need ower eyelid
surgery to remove the excess skin or some type of
peel. you need to be evaluated.
Q: I took a Plastic Surgery in December 05, the Scar on
my Lower Eyelid is now appearing in a Red Colour, My
Doctor advised me to apply Silicon Gel Sheets, are they
help Full Enough?
A: Silicone sheets only workk for
thickened scars. Your scar will eventually fade.
Q: I am such a perfectionist. Want lower eyelid lift and
have perfect results. which is better.
surgery from outside or inside the lower lid?
Tosca
A: I cannot answer your question
without examine you. You need to be evaluated by a
plastic surgeon.
Q: julie minnesota; I had blephaplasty
done lower and upper. One eye ended up drooping. After
that I had electropian repair which did not work. I do
not want a skin graft at 47? Is there anything else I
can do so my eye looks normal?
A: I suggest that you see an
ophthalmologic plastic surgeon for an evaluation. A
properly done skin graft might look reasonably normal.
Q: alison CA -is there any procedures that
will get rid of dark circles under the eye
A: Certainly. It is a very common
operation called a "lower blepharoplasty."
See a plastic surgeon.
Q: i have puffy eyes but thin skin, they
said restyline or fat fillers in my tear throughs are
best. which is better, and approx. how long does it

blepharoplasty) is the best way to permanently treat
your condition.
Q: I had upper and lower eyelid surgery 6
weeks ago. My vision becomes sometimes blury especially
at nite; one eye is worse than the other- should a be
concerned. Thanks. May.
A: There is a possibility of injury
to one of your eye muscles. I would see an
ophthalmologist.

brown spots post pregnancy and removing dark circles
under my eyes? How do I find a reputable doctor? Thanks.

A: Brown spots can sometimes be
removed with medications containing hydroquinone. The
circles under your eyes may require surgery. I suggest
that you look further here on PerfectYourself.com

can i do to do away with these ugly things Kris,OK
A: The dark circles are from
herniated fat pads. You would probably benefit from
lower eyelid surgery called a lower blepharoplasty.
Q: Hi, After a year lower eyelids surgery,
right eye has a hollow and a lumps of fat deposited to
remedy the excessive fat removal. Can this be fixed?
Thanks Zoulaikha
A: You need to be examined to
determine that.
Q: Hi, I am a 47 and have lost 120 lbs I
was a 40G now a 34DD but I am very!! saggy do you think
just a lift or would I have to do implants? Brenda from

judgment. Your crying is probably not going to effect
the outcome of your surgery.
Q: Is their a non invasive procedure for
